How to stop alt accounts joining your Discord server

Alts are second accounts people use to dodge bans, stack votes or spam. Discord's own settings slow them down, and a verification bot can catch the ones that get through.

Six steps

  1. Raise Discord's verification levelServer Settings, then Safety Setup, then Verification Level. Medium needs an account registered for 5 minutes; High adds 10 minutes in your server; Highest needs a verified phone number, which stops the most alts and some real people too.
  2. Lock the server behind a verify channelNew members should see only one channel until they pass. Rook's dashboard does this in one step, and everyone already there keeps access.
  3. Check each newcomer against your membersA verification bot can compare a new account's connection and device with people already in the server. Rook tells staff whose alt it is, and keeps out accounts on a banned member's device.
  4. Block VPNsAlts often come through VPNs and hosting networks so their addresses don't match. Blocking them makes an alt verify from its real connection.
  5. Set a minimum account ageBrand-new accounts are the cheapest alts. Rook can keep out accounts younger than 1, 7 or 30 days.
  6. Look for the other accounts when you banRook does this on every ban, and lists members still in the server who share a device or address with the banned account.

Questions

Can you stop alts completely?

No. Someone with a second phone and a different internet connection looks like a new person to any tool. The aim is to make alts slow and visible.

Is phone verification enough?

It stops many alts, but phone numbers are cheap to buy, and some real people don't want to add one.

Do verification bots collect my IP address?

Most see it while you verify. Rook turns it into a keyed fingerprint and drops it. Double Counter stored addresses, and in October 2026 reported a breach.

Discord's verification levels are from Discord's support article. The breach is from Double Counter's incident report.
